Árið 2012 fannst einn elsti hollenski sígildi Mini-bíll sem vitað er um – í öruggu skjóli frá umheiminum í yfirgefinni hlöðu í norðurhluta Hollands. Ekki löngu eftir að hann fannst áttaði MINI í Hollandi sig á möguleikunum sem slík himnasending fól í sér og setti af stað metnaðarfullt verkfræðilegt endurbyggingarverkefni.
Hinn algjörlega upprunalegi hvíti sígildi Austin 7 Mini-bíll frá 1959 reyndist vera einn af þeim 30 bílum sem upprunalega voru smíðaðir í Hollandi og skartar nokkrum einstökum hollenskum sérkennum. Alls voru fleiri en 4.000 MINI-bílar smíðaðir í Molenaar-bílaverksmiðjunni í Amersfoort. Þótt margir íhlutirnir hafi verið innfluttir beint frá Bretlandi var klæðningin í innanrýminu á þessum sígilda Mini-bíl framleidd innanlands og – skemmtileg staðreynd – fyllt með hrosshári! Þar sem fyrsti eigandi bílsins ferðaðist aldrei langt frá heimahéraðinu og sá næsti geymdi hann í hlöðunni hjá sér á síðari hluta 9. áratugarins hefur þessi bútur úr sögu MINI sem betur fer varðveist óskaddaður.
In keeping with the hometown hero celebrations, the restoration team of welders, body builders, painters and engine specialists were all selected from the 1,500 employees of the local automotive factory. Some of them brought over 30 years of experience in their field to the project, which ensured only the most qualified hands touched up this Mini veteran.
The Mini was painstakingly stripped down, piece by piece and gradually put back together. Wherever possible, replicas of the original parts were made with the greatest attention to detail. Some of these were rebuilt by hand and others, like the small 34 hp four-cylinder engine and the gearbox, given a complete overhaul. The MINI community were an invaluable part of the team, helping to track down rare parts from all corners of the earth. Sporting the original shade from 1959, Farina Grey, one of the oldest MINIs in the world was good as new and ready to start a new life of adventures.
